There are typically two kinds of presenters at the Oscars: the earnest and the hilarious. But every year, a handful of actors manage to capture the goal of either category in a way that makes the moment unforgettable.
On Sunday night, the Kodak Theatre saw plenty of earnest presenters. Natalie Portman, Colin Firth and Morgan Freeman reminded viewers why we love the Oscars.
But it was the presenters with the funny bits who really stole the show. Whether comparing short films to male genitalia or tossing cymbals onstage when they should have been reading out the name of an award winner, we couldn't stop chuckling. Here, the MTV Movies team handpicks the five most memorable presenters of the 2012 Oscars.
Robert Downey Jr., Documentarian
Trying to stay ahead of the curve, Robert Downey Jr. and a camera crew joined Gwyneth Paltrow onstage to present the Best Documentary award in an attempt to popularize his new art form, "live documentary." Of course, as Paltrow pointed out, that's called the news, but we couldn't get enough of their Tony Stark/ Pepper Potts-style banter several months before "The Avengers" hits theaters. And we like that Downey joked that he turned down the role in "The Descendants" with George Clooney looking on from the crowd.
Emma Stone Is Super Good
Yes, Emma Stone is charming, but we were still surprised at how well she pulled off the task of co-presenting Best Visual Effects alongside Ben Stiller. First-time Oscar presenter Stone acted out her skit flawlessly and even managed to poke fun at Stiller's previous presenting stunts in the process. But it was her asking "Superbad" co-star Jonah Hill to come onstage and dance with her — and his subsequent refusal — that made this one of the funniest moments of the night.
Sandra Bullock Is "Extremely" Bilingual
Did you know Sandra Bullock was bilingual? It certainly made her presenting the Oscar for Best Foreign Film all the more fitting. And although the actress said she was going to present the award in Mandarin, Bullock actually announced the award in German. For those who wondered about the Academy's motivation for having the "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" star present in a different language, it turns out it was because the Academy Awards "are an international show and because there are over 1.2 billion people in China." So why not?
Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis Make Music
Leave it to the stars of the upcoming political comedy "The Campaign," Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis, to make one of the funniest and most dramatic appearances of the night. Dressed in all-white tuxedos, the duo emerged from the orchestra pit smashing cymbals together. Because how else do you expect comedians to present the award for Best Original Song? Fortunately, winner Bret McKenzie also had a good sense of humor in his acceptance speech for "The Muppets" song "Man or Muppet."
"Bridesmaids" Stars Toast Scorsese Again
Who else but the cast of "Bridesmaids" could make presenting the three short-film categories one of the most hilarious of the night? Sure, Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph's whole opening spiel was one big penis joke, but can you expect any less when Melissa McCarthy earned her Oscar nomination for a part that featured her comically defecating in a sink? We're still trying to figure out what the rules of Rose Byrne and McCarthy's Martin Scorsese drinking game are, but we'll let you know when we do.

US stocks retreat from 3 1/2-year highs

U.S. stocks pulled back Monday from some of their highest levels in three and a half years.
In morning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 48 points, or 0.4 percent, to 12,935. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell five points to 1,361. The Nasdaq composite index slipped 13 points to 2,951.
On Friday, the S&P closed at its highest level since June 2008. And last week the Dow climbed above 13,000 several times. It has not closed above 13,000 since May 2008.
The price of oil has risen 14 percent in the past month alone, and closed on Friday above $109, its highest point since May. A strengthening economy and higher tensions with Iran have boosted oil prices.
But some are worried that if oil prices rise too fast, and gasoline prices along with them, they will stifle the economic recovery. The price of oil fell more than $1 on Monday to $108.68 in New York trading, providing some relief.
Government figures show that growth in demand for crude oil has slowed in the U.S. from a year earlier, although some oil traders are betting a strengthening economy will eventually boost consumption.
U.S. stocks moving included home improvement retailer Lowe's Cos., up 1 percent after reporting a 13 percent jump in fourth-quarter profits. Chipmaker Micron Technology Inc. rose 6.3 percent after Japanese rival Elpida Memory Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection.
Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. fell 1.4 percent after the investor said the company's board has picked a successor along with two backups.
All 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 were down, led by a 1.2 percent drop in financial stocks.
The drop in U.S. stocks follows similar declines at stock markets overseas. In London, the FTSE 100 index fell 1.1 percent. Germany's DAX gave up 1.7 percent, and the CAC-40 in France fell 1.5 percent.
The European debt crisis is also still a lingering concern. Talks in Mexico at a meeting of the G-20 nations' finance ministers and central bank heads pointed to the need for the European Union to add billions in funds designed to stabilize the situation and calm markets.
Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index ended down 0.1 percent at 9,633.9, giving up gains posted earlier in the day. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.8 percent to 21,217.86 and South Korea's Kospi lost 1.4 percent to 1,991.16.
There was positive news in housing. The number of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes rose in January to the highest level in nearly two years.
The rise in the index tracked by the National Association of Realtors supports the view that the housing market is gradually coming back.

?I was like having all this stress and all the pressure that we have to win to go to the playoffs, that?s pressure you have to bring to the table. After all, it was like, man, it was very disappointing. At one point I was like, ?Let?s move on? and there?s nothing you can do about this year. You?ve got to pull yourself together and do damage the next year.?

February 15, 2012 We are on the cusp of a new information revolution a quantum leap in technology and the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) at the University of Waterloo is leading the way. With the world's largest concentration of researchers working to harness the forces of quantum mechanics, the institute stands to transform computing, communications and other technologies.
"We are learning to speak the language of the quantum realm of atoms and electrons and molecules," says IQC Executive Director Raymond Laflamme. "By controlling nature's most fundamental forces, we can build incredible new technologies that will revolutionize how we process, store, share and understand information."
Modern computers function according to the classical laws of physics, but a new model is emerging that is instead governed by the laws of quantum mechanics, which function at the atomic scale. Microchips have been steadily approaching this scale for more than 50 years and computers that function according to the laws of quantum mechanics promise to vastly outperform their classical counterparts.
While practical quantum computers are still years away from the marketplace, research into quantum cryptography is leading to a wave of spinoff companies. Quantum technologies, such as powerful sensors that can be used for environmentally sustainable oil exploration and materials design, are emerging from IQC, and quantum cryptography is being effectively used to ensure perfect security in bank transfers and election results. IQC scientists are also starting to create global quantum communications networks protected by the security of quantum cryptography.
Given Canada's history of leadership in telecommunications, many predict that quantum information might just be this country's next big industry. With a faculty of 17 world-leading faculty members and more than 100 students and post-doctoral fellows, research at IQC is at the forefront of this new and exciting branch of science and technology.
Canada's quantum leaders, including Raymond Laflamme, will be participating at this week's annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, starting with the Canada Foundation for Innovation, Dialogues at UBC Robson Square, this Wednesday, February 15, at 6:00 p.m.

Companies across the country are hiring more workers, at least that's the case if you ask their employees. In 2011, 31 percent of U.S. workers reported that their employers were hiring, according to?Gallup?s Job Creation Index. Only 18 percent said that their employers were laying workers off. Of course, residents of some states report much higher rates of job creation than others. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the Gallup Index, as well as a number of other economic indicators, and identified the eight states where residents think companies are hiring most.
To develop the Job Creation Index, Gallup asked those surveyed whether companies are hiring or letting employees go. While the national score reflects that most states believe employers are hiring, 24/7 Wall St.?s analysis suggests that self-reporting by workers may not perfectly align with reality.
These states are not experiencing the greatest recoveries -- including in employment -- as they have little to recover from. The states? strong economies may be affecting their residents? perception of the economy. Five of the eight states on this list are among the top nine states on another recent Gallup poll ranking states? confidence in the national economy. Those who live in states that are doing well see the entire country as doing well.
The majority of states where high percentages of workers reported job creation also have extremely low unemployment rates to begin with. Six of the eight states have among the 10 lowest unemployment rates in the country. North Dakota, the state where the largest share of workers reported that their employers are hiring, has the lowest unemployment rate in the country.
And while unemployment rates are low, the majority of these states have had relatively low unemployment rates for some time. Most did not have particularly impressive improvements in unemployment last year. Other than Utah and West Virginia -- the only states with exceptionally large drops in unemployment -- the rest have had low unemployment rates since 2006 and throughout the recession.

Housing markets in most of the states where respondents believe jobs are plentiful also have been stable. Seven of the eight states on the list are among the 15 markets that suffered the least from the third quarter of 2006 to the third quarter of 2011. Five of the states actually experienced increases in home prices over this period.
These are the eight states where workers say companies are hiring.
1. North Dakota

Between Q3 2006 and Q3 2011, home prices increased 0.4?percent, the seventh-biggest gain in the U.S. As of December 2011, the unemployment rate in the state was just 5.6?percent, the sixth-lowest rate in the country. According to Gallup?s job creation poll, 34?percent of state workers report their businesses are hiring. Nationally, that rate is just 31.5?percent.
3. Oklahoma

Oklahoma made it through the worst parts of the recession largely unscathed. Home prices increased 3.5?percent from the third quarter of 2006 to the third quarter of 2011. Oklahoma?s unemployment rate also remained below the national average. While it did not significantly decrease last year, falling from 6.8?percent at the beginning of last year to 6.1?percent by December 2011, it was notably lower than the national rate of 8.5?percent at the time. Still, 34.6?percent of Oklahoma residents report their employers are hiring workers.

During the housing crisis, home prices in Utah dropped 16.2?percent, the 20th-biggest decline. However, real estate prices are starting to rebound. According to Fiserv-Case Shiller, home prices will increase 1.5?percent by the third quarter of next year, the seventh-biggest projected increase in the country. In the past year, Utah has seen one of the biggest improvements in unemployment. Between December 2010 and December 2011, the unemployment rate fell by 20?percent to just 6?percent. This drop was the second biggest of any state, behind only North Dakota. According to the Gallup?s job creation survey, 15.4?percent of Utah workers report employers are letting workers go compared to a national rate of 18.4?percent.
