Union Rags cleans up in Belmont win

Monday June 11, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) -- Union Rags picked up right where I?ll Have Another left off, coming from behind to catch a Bob Baffert-trained horse at the finish in a Triple Crown race.

In Saturday?s Belmont Stakes, it was another photo finish decided by a neck. Just like the Preakness.

The 3-year-old bay colt barreled through a slim opening on the rail to edge Paynter, dealing Baffert, jockey Mike Smith and owner Ahmed Zayat a third loss in this year?s Triple Crown series.

"We needed every bit of the mile and a half," winning trainer Michael Matz said.

I?ll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness with stirring stretch drives over Baffert?s Bodemeister. But the champion stunned the racing world Friday when he was scratched from the Belmont and retired due to a tendon injury, relinquishing a shot at the first Triple Crown sweep since 1978 and only the 12th ever.

His absence opened up the race for Union Rags, who finished a troubled seventh in the Derby after a bumpy start.

Union Rags skipped the Preakness and because of the Derby problems switched jockeys for the Belmont -- from Julien Leparoux to John Velazquez, who picked up his second Belmont victory; he won in 2007 with filly Rags to Riches.

"I have to give it to the horse. He did it all for me. He just worked so unbelievable and I was just hoping he could put that work into today?s race and he did," said Velazquez,

who will enter racing?s Hall of Fame in August. "I was very proud of him."?

A crowd of 85,811, cheered as Paynter and Union Rags furiously battled down the stretch, with Union Rags barely catching the front-runner in the second straight photo finish to decide a Triple Crown race this year.

"Is there a Triple Crown for seconds?" Baffert said. "I really felt like I was going to win the Belmont. It was snatched away again."

Zayat was just as bummed, calling it "a heartbreaking defeat."

"He ran his guts out," he said, referring to Paynter, who was making just his fourth career start. "I?m very disappointed we opened the rail for (Union Rags)."

Jockey Mike Smith took the blame.

"I?m an old veteran, you know," he said. "They?re not supposed to get through on the fence on me, and he did. I dropped the ball. My fault."

Union Rags was along the inside in the middle of the pack until it was time to make a move for the lead, and that?s when Velazquez guided him to the inside of the front-running Paynter.

Turning for home, Union Rags was full of run, but needed an opening. Velazquez had no room to swing outside, so he focused on finding a hole along the rail. Suddenly, a sliver appeared when Paynter slid over just enough to let Union Rags through in the final sixteenth of a mile. And then it was a charge to the finish line.

They raced head-to-head, with both jockeys furiously whipping their horses in the shadow of the wire. Union Rags stuck a neck in front at the end and gave fans a thrilling finish that was certainly reminiscent of the sidelined I?ll Have Another.

Union Rags, the 5-2 second choice, ran the 1 1/2 miles in 2:30.42. The colt owned by Phyllis Wyeth returned $7.50, $4.20 and $3.40.

"It was my dream and he made it come true," said Wyeth, wheelchair-bound as the result of a 1962 car accident in which she broke her neck. "Nobody would have gotten through on the rail other than Johnny. That was unbelievable. He just said, ?Move over, I?m coming.? He believed in the horse and Michael got him there."

Before the race, I?ll Have Another, with jockey Mario Gutierrez aboard, walked into the winner?s circle for a tribute to the newly retired champion. Trainer Doug O?Neill removed the chestnut colt?s saddle for the last time as his barn staff hugged each other and the crowd cheered in a poignant salute.

Undoing health care law could have ripple effects

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It sounds like a silver lining. Even if the Supreme Court overturns President Barack Obama's health care law, employers can keep offering popular coverage for the young adult children of their workers.

But here's the catch: The parents' taxes would go up.

That's only one of the messy potential ripple effects when the Supreme Court delivers its verdict on the Affordable Care Act this month. The law affects most major components of the U.S. health care system in its effort to extend coverage to millions of uninsured people.

Because the legislation is so complicated, an orderly unwinding would prove difficult if it were overturned entirely or in part.

Better Medicare prescription benefits, currently saving hundreds of dollars for older people with high drug costs, would be suspended. Ditto for preventive care with no co-payments, now available to retirees and working families alike.

Partially overturning the law could leave hospitals, insurers and other service providers on the hook for tax increases and spending cuts without the law's promise of more paying customers to offset losses.

If the law is upheld, other kinds of complications could result.

The nation is so divided that states led by Republicans are largely unprepared to carry out critical requirements such as creating insurance markets. Things may not settle down.

"At the end of the day, I don't think any of the major players in the health insurance industry or the provider community really wants to see the whole thing overturned," said Christine Ferguson, a health policy expert who was commissioner of public health in Massachusetts when Mitt Romney was governor.

"Even though this is not the most ideal solution, at least it is moving us forward, and it does infuse some money into the system for coverage," said Ferguson, now at George Washington University. As the GOP presidential candidate, Romney has pledged to wipe Obama's law off the books. But he defends his Massachusetts law that served as a prototype for Obama's.

While it's unclear how the justices will rule, oral arguments did not go well for the Obama administration. The central issue is whether the government can require individuals to have health insurance and fine them if they don't.

That mandate takes effect in 2014, at the same time that the law would prohibit insurance companies from denying coverage to people with existing health problems. Most experts say the coverage guarantee would balloon costs unless virtually all people joined the insurance pool.

Opponents say Congress overstepped its constitutional authority by issuing the insurance mandate. The administration says the requirement is permissible because it serves to regulate interstate commerce. Most people already are insured. The law provides subsidies to help uninsured middle-class households pay premiums and expands Medicaid to pick up more low-income people.

The coverage for young adults up to age 26 on a parent's health insurance is a popular provision that no one's arguing about. A report last week from the Commonwealth Fund estimated that 6.6 million young adults have taken advantage of the benefit, while a new Gallup survey showed the uninsured rate for people age 18-25 continues to decline, down to 23 percent from 28 percent when the law took effect.

Families will be watching to see if their 20-somethings transitioning to the work world will get to keep that newfound security.

Because the benefit is a winner with consumers, experts say many employers and insurers would look for ways to keep offering it even if there's no legal requirement to do so.

But economist Paul Fronstin of the Employee Benefit Research Institute says many parents would pay higher taxes as a result because they would have to pay for the young adult's coverage with after-tax dollars. Under the health care law, that coverage now comes out of pre-tax dollars.

Fronstin says there's no way to tell exactly how much that tax increase might be, but a couple of hundred dollars a year or more is a reasonable ballpark estimate. Upper-income taxpayers would have a greater liability.

"Adult children aren't necessarily dependents for tax purposes, but an employer can allow anyone to be on a plan, just like they now allow domestic partners," said Fronstin. "If your employer said, 'I'm going to let you keep this,' it would become a taxable benefit for certain people."

Advocates for the elderly are also worried about untoward ripple effects.

If the entire law is overturned, seniors with high prescription costs in Medicare's "donut hole" coverage gap could lose annual discounts averaging about $600. AARP policy director David Certner says he would hope the discounts could remain in place at least through the end of this year.

Yet that might not be possible. Lacking legal authority, Medicare would have to take away the discounts. Drugmakers, now bearing the cost, could decide they want to keep offering discounts voluntarily. But then they'd risk running afoul of other federal rules that bar medical providers from offering financial inducements to Medicare recipients.

"I don't think anyone has any idea," said Certner.

A mixed verdict from the high court would be the most confusing outcome. Some parts of the law would be struck down while others lurch ahead.

That kind of result would seem to call for Congress to step in and smooth any necessary adjustments. Yet partisan divisions on Capitol Hill are so intense that hardly anyone sees a chance that would happen this year.

Chinabound Sony Xperia Neo L with ICS gets handled, holds nothing back

It was only a couple of months ago that we first crossed paths with Sony's Xperia Neo L, and now the Ice Cream Sandwich handset is back with a vengeance -- at least in terms of exposure. As you may know, details were revealed in abundance (read: 1GHz Snapdragon S2 CPU, 512MB of RAM) during our first MT25i encounter, but thanks to Taiwanese site ePrice, we're able to gander at the device posing in an array of different angles and leaving very little to the imagination. For now, pricing still remains a mystery, though we do know Sony's 4-inch (854 x 480) Neo L is expected to hit Chinese shelves later this month. Until then, anyone intrigued can jump past the break to check out a different look, or hit the source link for the full set of snaps.

Obama: Congress, Europe must stem economic crisis

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The economy at risk, President Barack Obama accused Republicans on Friday of pursuing policies that would weaken the U.S. recovery. He simultaneously urged Europe's leaders to prevent an overseas debt crisis from dragging down the rest of the world.

At a White House news conference five months before Election Day, the president also said Republican allegations that his administration has leaked classified information for political gain were offensive. He said his administration has "zero tolerance" for any such practice.

Republicans fired back quickly on Obama's comments on the economy, particularly his insistence that "the private sector is doing fine" when it comes to job creation.

Campaigning in Iowa, Republican rival Mitt Romney said Obama's view was "defining what it means to be detached and out of touch."

From the White House podium, the president urged passage of legislation that he said would create jobs ? proposals that Republicans have long blocked.

"The recipes that they're promoting are basically the kinds of policies that would add weakness to the economy, would result in further layoffs, would not provide relief to the housing market and would result ... in lower growth," said the president, who is locked in a close campaign for re-election.

Obama's tone was markedly different when it came to European leaders, whom he prodded to inject money into the banking system. He also said it is in "everybody's interest for Greece to remain in the eurozone," despite the division of public opinion inside the country where austerity measures have been imposed to deal with out-of-control deficits.

"The Greek people also need to recognize that their hardships will likely be worse if they choose to exit from the eurozone," Obama said.

"The solutions to these problems are hard, but there are solutions," he said.

The president spoke after several days of difficult turns for his re-election prospects, including last Friday's report that the unemployment rate had risen slightly to 8.2 percent in May as job creation had slowed, and new signs that the European debt crisis was hurting the U.S. economy.

In the overtly political realm, Wisconsin's Republican Gov. Scott Walker turned back a recall movement led by organized labor, while former President Bill Clinton stirred controversy by saying Obama should be ready to sign a short-term extension of all expiring tax cuts ? including those that apply to the wealthiest taxpayers that the president has vowed not to renew.

The president's attack on Republicans was part of his campaign playbook in an election in which the economy is the top issue. Romney is campaigning for the White House as better equipped to created jobs, and polls make the race a close one, with only about a dozen battleground states in dispute.

Said McConnell: "The economy would respond much more favorably to providing the tax certainty Americans deserve by extending all the tax rates and assuring employers they do not have to budget for the largest tax increase in American history next year."

Obama's opening remarks were part jawboning and part economics lesson.

He stressed the importance of a strong European economy, saying, "If there's less demand for our products in places like Paris or Madrid it could mean less business for manufacturers in places like Pittsburgh or Milwaukee."

The president said that if Congress had passed his jobs bill from last fall, "we'd be on track to have a million more Americans working this year, the unemployment rate would be lower, our economy would be stronger."

"Of course Congress refused to pass this jobs plan in full," he said dismissively. "They left most of the jobs plan just sitting there, and in light of the headwinds we are facing right now I urge them to reconsider because there are steps we can take right now."

Congress approved an extension of the payroll tax, which Obama said was helping the economy, but Republicans balked at calls for additional spending to provide funding for teachers, school construction, highways and more, citing concerns about the deficit.

The president said U.S. companies actually have been creating jobs at a faster clip than they did after the previous recession while state and local governments have been shedding them.

"Where we're seeing weaknesses in our economy is in the state and local governments, often times cuts initiated by governors or mayor who are not getting the kind of help they got in the past from the federal government," he said.

"If Republicans want to be helpful, if they really want to move forward and put people back to work," they should enact legislation to permit the hiring of more teachers and law enforcement personnel, he said.

As for leaks of classified information, Obama said his administration has "zero tolerance" for it. Lawmakers are investigating recent leaks of sensitive information about the covert drone and cyberwars against terrorism. Republican Sen. John McCain has accused the Obama White House of leaking the information to bolster the president's standing on national security grounds.

Verbatim Store 'n' Go V3 USB Drive (16GB)

Verbatim's Store 'N' Go line of USB drives has grown a little bit larger and more than a little bit faster with the Store 'N' Go V3, a 16GB drive that gets a speed bump, thanks to USB 3.0. It doesn't top other USB 3.0 drives we've reviewed, but if you're used to USB 2.0 speeds, it's a noticeable performance boost. Combine this with one of the most affordable price tags ($20 street for 16GB) and a color selection pulled from a pack of Starbursts, and you've got a decent USB drive.

Design and Features
The Store 'n' Go V3 uses a retractable USB connection, and plastic construction. The visual design takes the same candy-colored hues used in the Verbatim Store 'n' Go Clip-it USB Drive ($22 street, 3.5 stars). The black and green color scheme, called Eucalyptus Green, is nice and the brightly colored slider can also be found in several other colors, with names like Volcanic Orange, Hot Pink, Caribbean Blue, Sunkissed Yellow, Violet and the less exciting Grey. The Store 'n' Go V3 is also available in 32GB and 64GB capacities, but only in grey.

The retractable USB connection means there's no cap to lose, but the sliding mechanism isn't as smooth as it probably should be. The sliding mechanism is stiff, and it doesn't provide much traction for your thumb, meaning that you'll often find yourself opening the drive only part way.

The drive offers 16GB of storage, which translates to 14.4GB of usable space. With no software cluttering the drive, you won't need to clean off anything, and the drive is compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems thanks to FAT32 formatting. For those who want some additional protection, Verbatim does offer password lock software for the V3, available as a free download through Verbatim's website.

The Verbatim Store 'n' Go V3 is available through several online retailers for about $20, putting the 16GB drive at $1.25 per gigabyte. By comparison, all of the higher capacity competitors are more expensive, with Verbatim's own Store 'n' Go Pro USB Flash Drive (64GB) ($117 street, 4 stars) selling for $1.83 per GB, the rugged rubberized Corsair Flash Voyager GT (32GB) ($64.99 direct, 4 stars) for $2.03 per GB, and the Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 2 (32GB) ($80 street, 4 stars) sells for $2.35 per GB. Among USB 3.0 flash drives, the Store 'n' Go V3 is the most affordable of the bunch, and Verbatim backs it up with a lifetime warranty on parts and labor.

Performance
The Verbatim Store 'n' Go V3 offered up passable performance in our timed data transfer tests, clocking in with write speeds of 10.7 MBps and read speeds topping out at 79.2 MBps using USB 3.0. While this outpaces USB 2.0 drives by a large margin, it couldn't touch the speed of the leading USB 3.0 drive we've tested, the 32GB Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 2, which had speeds of 61.8 MBps (write) and 99.4 (read). The Corsair Flash Voyager GT also topped it, using USB 3.0 to pump out speeds of 36.7 MBps (write) and 95.6 MBps (read).

Drives with only USB 2.0, however, were left behind even when the V3 was connected through a USB 2.0 port. With USB 2.0, the Verbatim V3 scored 10.2 MBps (write) and 33.6 MBps (read). By comparison, the 16GB Duracell Rugged USB only scored 4.1 MBps (write) and 12.5 MBps (read), while the Editors' Choice Kingston DataTravler Locker+ (8GB) ($18 street, 4 stars) scored 9.7 MBps (write) and 24.0 MBps (read).

When all the factors are accounted for, the Verbatim Store 'n' Go V3 is a mixed bag, but comes up positive overall. The low price per GB, the option of downloadable password protection, and the bright colors available all combine to balance out middling performance. It won't be replacing our Editors' Choice Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB), but it's still worth a look for straightforward storage with a USB 3.0 boost in speed.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Verbatim Store 'n' Go V3 USB Drive (16GB) with several other flash drives side by side.

Home of imprisoned former Ukranian prime minister becomes a problem for California county

A California mansion owned by a now-imprisoned former Ukranian prime minister has become a headache for local officials trying to collect $2.1 million in back taxes and fines while fending off vandals.

Pavlo Lazarenko's property in Marin County has been vandalized by partying teenagers who made off with a Pablo Picasso lithograph worth an estimated $30,000, the Marin Independent Journal reported (http://bit.ly/Ltdhf4 ) Friday.

The thieves also took silver candlesticks, laptop computers and leather coats, police said.

The teenagers ransacked multiple rooms in the house and managed to get away before officers could arrest anyone, Novato police Sgt. Eric Riddell said.

The 19,500-square-foot home was acquired by a company linked to Lazarenko in 1998, just before his arrest in Switzerland on suspicion of money laundering.

Lazarenko later fled to the U.S., where he was arrested again and eventually convicted of hiding millions of dollars in American banks.

Marin County has filed claims for back taxes and late payment fines on the property where Eddie Murphy once stayed while shooting a movie.

Does cooperation require both reciprocity and alike neighbors?

ScienceDaily (June 8, 2012) ? Max Planck scientists have developed a new theoretical model on the evolution of cooperation.

Evolution by definition is cold and merciless: it selects for success and weeds out failure. It seems only natural to expect that such a process would simply favour genes that help themselves and not others. Yet cooperative behaviour can be observed in many areas, and humans helping each other are a common phenomenon. Thus, one of the major questions in science today is how cooperative behaviour could evolve. Scientists from the Max Planck Institute of Evolutionary Biology in Pl?n, Harvard University, and the University of Amsterdam have now developed a new model combining two possible explanations -- direct reciprocity and population structure -- and found that both repetition and structured population are essential for the evolution of cooperation. The researchers conclude that human societies can best achieve high levels of cooperative behaviour if their individuals interact repeatedly, and if populations exhibit at least a minor degree of structure.

The scientists addressed the question how cooperative behaviour could evolve using a game called the prisoner's dilemma, which considers two types of players: co-operators who pay a cost to help others; and defectors who avoid paying the cost, while reaping benefits from the co-operators they interact with. In general, everyone would be better off if they had engaged in cooperation, but from the point of view of the individual, defection is more beneficial. Selection will therefore always favour the defectors, and not cooperation. Researchers have used population structure and direct reciprocity to explain why cooperation has nevertheless evolved. In structured populations, co-operators are more likely to interact with other co-operators and defectors with defectors. Direct reciprocity involves the repetition of interaction and is therefore based on experiences gained from prior events involving cooperation. In the past, both approaches have been regarded separately.

Using computer simulations and mathematical models, a group of scientists around Julian Garcia from the Max-Planck Institute of Evolutionary Biology in Pl?n have developed a new model that is taking both concepts into account. They discovered that direct reciprocity alone is not enough, and that population structure is necessary in order to reach a high level of cooperation. When there is some reciprocity, the average level of cooperation increases because alike types are more likely to interact with each other. Additionally, the researchers observed that cooperation occurs if cooperative and defective individuals are highly clustered and repetition is rare. And surprisingly, too much repetition can even harm cooperation in cases when the population structure makes cooperation between individuals very likely. This is due to the fact that reciprocity can protect defectors from invasion by defectors in a similar manner that it prevents cooperation from being invaded by defectors.

"Without population structure, cooperation based on repetition is unstable," Garcia explains one of the main findings. This is especially true for humans, where repetition occurs regularly and who live in fluid, but not totally unstructured populations. A pinch of population structure helps a lot if repetition is present. "Therefore, the recipe for human cooperation might be: a bit of structure and a lot of repetition," says Julian Garcia. This phenomenon results in a high average level of cooperation.

OnLive Multiview on an LG Google TV, eyeson video

Between the giant screen gaming demos, the shiny new hardware and the ever-present booth babes, the Electronic Entertainment Expo may well be the short attention span capital of North America at the moment. How does one possible manage to up the ante on electronic attention deficit disorder? Nintendo and Microsoft have both made pretty admirable strives in that direction with the Wii U GamePad and SmartGlass, respectively, bringing a second screen to home game play. OnLive is helping move things along as well, by way of the MultiView feature, which brings several screens worth of content to a single display -- in other words, you have other games taking up screen real estate while you're playing a game.

OnLive's Spectate feature is nothing new, of course, letting you keep tabs on friends and scores of other players. MultiView, however, lets you watch that content while playing, the majority of the screen devoted to your own game, with this added footage in a sidebar. You can access the feature with the click of a button and chat with friends or coordinate with teammates. OnLive showed us the feature on an LG G2 Google TV -- the perfect opportunity for the company to highlight the new partnership. The 55-inch display also served as an ideal demo -- while the feature will also be available for mobile devices, you're really going to want a big screen, lest the whole thing become a little too cacophonous.

FTC tells ITC that bans over standards-based patents aren't kosher, looks warily at Motorola and Samsung

Motorola Droid RAZR and Apple iPhone 4

Most of the scrutiny over abuse of standards-based patents has come through European Union investigations of Motorola and Samsung. That attention might come to the US if the Federal Trade Commission has its way. It just sent a letter to the International Trade Commission arguing that companies should be blocked from landing bans if they base their disputes on standards. These kinds of blockades "deter innovation" and spur companies to try for much more of a cash windfall from a patent than it's really worth, the FTC argues. The letter doesn't directly accuse anyone of getting their fingers dirty, but there's little doubt that it's referring to Motorola (now part of Google) and Samsung: their varying ITC disputes against Apple and Microsoft are often based around standards patents for technologies like 3G and H.264 video, which aren't supposed to demand legal action except as a last resort. An angry FTC missive doesn't constitute a formal investigation that would actively worry either Motorola or Samsung, but it certainly fires a warning shot across the bow.

Oracle buying Collective Intellect

(AP) ? Oracle is buying Collective Intellect Inc. for an undisclosed sum as it expands its social media tracking services.

Collective Intellect helps businesses monitor and respond to consumer conversations on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms. Clients can then use this data to improve products, customer service, marketing campaigns and find new customers. The privately held company was founded in 2005 and is based in Boulder, Colo.

The software maker announced the deal Tuesday, one day after Salesforce.com Inc. said that it would buy social media marketing company Buddy Media. As more companies promote themselves on social media, technology companies are looking for ways to help customers manage their presence in those mediums.

Anna Betbeze's Painted Flotaki Carpets Come To MASS MoCA ...

Anna Betbeze's pigmented Flotaki carpets don't look like anything you have ever seen before. They kind of resemble a muppet carcass, or perhaps a tie-dyed towel that has been rotting since 1965, but they certainly don't look like your average museum piece.

rs7206_2012_anna betbeze_017lpr

The artist takes the already visually lush Greek rugs and proceeds to cut, tear, and burn away excess material. She then saturates them with acid dye, Manic Panic, beet juice, and other pigments before putting them in the washing machine and hitting the "on" switch. Afterward, she hangs them on nails, and the decaying rugs begin to sag and fold over time. Through this act of mutilating her rugs past the point of recognition, they become something else entirely. Her last exhibition was entitled "Moss Garden" and this one continues to channel imagery of mold, moss, foliage, fungus and rust. The carpet graveyard becomes a playground for color and texture to spawn and grow, resembling fuzzy coral wisps swaying under the sea.

The strange breed of sculpture has been compared to Robert Morris's work, whose felt sculptures similarly use gravity as a medium. In an interview with ARTINFO, Betbeze herself described these felt sculptures as among her favorite things. Others have mentioned Helen Frankenthaler, who stained pigment into raw canvas. But Betbeze's work stands out in its abused aesthetic; rather than a created work her works look like they have been beaten to a pulp. Underneath the bruises, fungus and rot, a new object is born. The works, which must be seen in person to fully grasped, are both attractive and repulsive, luscious and lonely.

Betbeze's new works will show at MASS MoCA until November 5, 2012.

Live from Sony's PlayStation press event at E3 2012

3 hrs.

The last big press event of the day belongs to Sony, and we expect them to fight the spreading menace of Microsoft and the new hardware of Nintendo with a bevy of solid gamer-type games. Uncharted, Twisted Metal, all that good stuff. They should be going live at 6PM Pacific time.

5:50 - After a refreshing drink and dine outside, we're waiting and watching on-stage players play Vita games. Thrilling!

5:56 - As you can see, it's another intimate gathering, this one was invite only, and the location is top secret so don't try to find it. The lady on the overhead tells us we will begin on time at 6.

6:01 - We are beginning. Thanks to our valiant Vita players who braved the jibes of the crowd so bravely. Here we have a little montage of Sony games... and yet more dubstep.

6:05 - Jack Tretton is onstage hyping up the crowd, which is responding loudly, even the press area. Especially the press area. Talking about how it's so relaxing to host an event like this because every E3 gets picked apart by commenters and forum-goers for months afterward. But seriously, he says, we love you people, and gamers are the greatest. Never Stop Playing, he says.

6:09 - David Cage, creator of Heavy Rain, is here to unveil a new game - and a new IP. An emotional experience. Called Beyond - Two Souls. And it appears to be about death. Spans 15 years of a girl's life who has a supernatural connection. Ellen Page will be playing the girl. Interesting shot of her with her facial motion capture.

6:13 - Scene from the game - slight uncanny valley territory. We'll post the trailer soon, I'm sure. Only on PS3, my friend.

6:20 - Now, Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, in which famous characters from franchises battle it out. Why Kratos wouldn't kill everyone I do not understand. They're going to give a nice little live demo - after they announce that it will be coming to Vita with cross-platform play. That should be fun.?

6:23 - Where have I seen a hovering, pink-dressed princess before? Maybe it's just my imagination.

6:29 -?LittleBigPlanet will be getting special tools and controls using the Vita - useful for making stuff in the game, or playing multiplayer.

6:30 - PSN is getting a boost here - Tretton is promising to push it more, get more exclusive games on it, more indie stuff. Over 200 games coming out on PSN this year. And PlayStation Plus will be getting a bunch of free games - you can just plain download 'em.

6:32 - E3's first Oprah moment! Everyone here is getting a free year of Playstation Plus! Woo! And Vita is getting a bunch of original PS games. Can't wait to load up my Vita with Final Fantasy VIII. That's right.

6:35 - Call of Duty Black Ops: Unclassified is coming to Vita. Aaand some kind of micro Assassin's Creed 3? Yes, Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation with first-ever female assassin! Also comes with first-ever 'crystal white' Vita.

6:39 - Oooh, Assassin's Creed on boats! This is going to be great. Oh man, this looks awesome. Cannons and ship-boarding and everything.

6:45 - 4-player co-op in Far Cry 3 on PS3. Pssh, I was playing 64-player in Tribes in like 1998. This kind of co op looks fun - mayhem.

6:49 - "Move"ing on to the Move. Head of this team is hard at work on something new, based on... of all things, the book. Let's take a look... in a Wonderbook. Looks like a big old platform for augmented reality tech. A book that shows crazy things on it, on your TV at least. Hard to explain.

6:54 - J.K. Rowling has contributed a book, or at least collaborated on one, called the Book of Spells. Lets you cast spells as you read - could be very fun for young Potter fans. Here comes the demo. Very nice little art direction - kids will love swinging a wand around, accidentally setting their book on fire, watching little plays, etc. Some minor presentations as they fail to open a door... but it works out in the end.

7:05 - Playstation Suite on Android getting some talk here. Bringing PlayStation certified to other phones - first, HTC. Probably the One S and One X. Oh, and PlayStation Suite is now Playstation Mobile - probably a good move.

7:08 - And here we have some God of War Ascension action. He is fighting a Ram-Man. No, many of them. Lots of horns being pulled off. Comically brutal.

7:11 - Release the Kraken!?Kraken fight. And now a fight with an Elephant-Man. Worst vacation ever. In case you're wondering, it looks a lot like God of War. But it does look very nice, that's for sure. Comes out March 12, 2013. That is a very long time from now.

7:17 - Animal noises, and a man in a shiny red jacket standing a foot away from me. What does it mean? Oh - The Last of Us demo. The crowd goes wild. It looks great. Very tense. Love the constant dialog between the dad and the kid. This game is going to be great. Looks really, really brutal, though. The crowd is going nuts.

And that's it! Thanks for tuning in.

Q&A: What does this mean ?take as a dietary ... - Body Health & Fitness

Question by WEEHIGH: What does this mean ?take as a dietary supplement??
Im taking acai berry pills and says to

?take one pill after lunch and dinner as a dietary supplement.?

what does ?take as a dietary supplement? mean? does it mean to substitute food for the pill? or take the pill with the food?
also..its the acai berry that Oprah was talking about, so i figured its legit.

Best answer:

Answer by Heather
?Dietary supplements? is a fancy way of saying that taking something may or may not help you in a particular style of dieting. I?ve seen it on herbal teas that are supposed to aid with digestion, too.

Sexual harassment in the world of video gaming ? Pickersleigh ...

Woman at the Sony Playstation booth during the Electronic Entertainment Expo on 7 June, 2011

The world of video gaming has a problem with sexual harassment. The number of women gamers is growing fast ? in the US they now make up 42% of the total ? but it remains a macho environment, where women are often exposed to abusive language.

(The language in this report reflects that reality.)

?Get back in the kitchen and take your goddamn hands off a video game controller.?

The male voices are aggressive, even angry. Their put-downs are laced with strong swearing and sexual insults.

?Stupid bitch,? says one. ?Fat whore,? adds another.

?I hope your boyfriend beats you. Nah, you can?t get a boyfriend.?

The tirade of abuse ends and Jenny Haniver laughs.

?Get back in the kitchen?? she says. ?I?m not in the kitchen because I?m here kicking your ass on video games, that?s what I?m good at.?

Jenny HaniverOnline gamer Jenny Haniver

We?re sitting in her living room in Wisconsin, listening to audio recordings she makes when she goes online to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. It?s a combat-based video game, where players can talk to each other via headsets.

The recordings end up on Haniver?s website, Not in the Kitchen Any More. She plays in the evening after college and says most nights she?ll have to deal with harassment of some kind. Some of it just puerile, but some is graphic and threatening.

?This enemy player backed out of the middle of the match and sent me a voice message,? Haniver says, remembering her worst experience. He said he hoped she would be raped and she and her family killed.

Amazingly, this is not uncommon.

Another website, Fat, Ugly or Slutty, posts examples of harassment from all games ? mostly pictures of in-game messages that women receive from other gamers.

?[There's] a plethora of stupidity when it comes to what women receive in online games,? says Grace, one of the site?s co-founders.

?There are some people who can?t even look at Fat, Ugly or Slutty because it reminds them too much of their lives, it upsets them too much,? she says. ?A lot of people have just walked away from online play entirely.?

Gamer Jonathan Quamina

Several high profile incidents this year have intensified the focus on how women are treated.

In February, video game writer Jennifer Hepler was quoted in a post on the online forum Reddit, suggesting that games would be better if gamers had the option to skip the combat sections. This attracted vicious attacks in online forums and on Twitter, many of them focused on her gender.

Around the same time, a gaming competition called Cross Assault gained widespread notoriety after a male player called Aris Bakhtanians made offensive comments about fellow player Miranda Pakozdi, including guessing her bra size, talking about her body parts, and sniffing her.

All this happened face-to-face at the competition, but was broadcast on an internet video stream. The stream included a discussion in which Bakhtanians claimed that ?sexual harassment is part of the culture? of their gaming community, known as the fighting game community.

Bakhtanians also defended the casual use of the word ?rape? and phrases like ?rape that bitch? as expressions for defeating another character.

?There?s nothing unacceptable about that,? he claimed. ?We?re in America, man. This isn?t North Korea, we can say what we want.?

Pakozdi eventually quit the competition, and a video of excerpts from the internet stream went viral, quickly gaining 200,000 hits on YouTube. Bakhtanians released a statement saying he?d made a mistake and apologising to Pakozdi.

The Cross Assault incident sparked an intense debate.

?Just watching it happen made me a little angry, it was hard for me to watch,? says Emily Chow, a member of the fighting game community in Toronto, Canada.

After Cross Assault she blogged about her own experiences of harassment.

?I feel like I should start taking a stronger stand against people who do act this way,? she says.

Post-fight statements

Aris Bakhtanians:

I realise now that I should not have treated Miranda the way I did, and I should not have encouraged others to do so on the stream. I apologised to Miranda at Cross Assault and am apologising again to her now. I clearly made a mistake and I will live with it. I?m deeply sorry to everyone involved.

Miranda Pakozdi:

Maybe some people don?t understand that it was just one person who did this to me. I was so appalled at what Aris said on the fifth night that I could not stop crying. The next day I made the decision to leave because of it. In short: my coach was a jerk, he doesn?t represent the entire community.

Vince Hui, another Toronto player, says harassment is ?a little bit of an epidemic? within the video game community. ?In a lot of ways we need to learn to grow up a little bit,? he says.

But not everyone felt that Cross Assault was cause for change. Jonathan Quamina, an avid gamer, expressed his support for Bakhtanians, telling him not to apologise.

?As a female you can?t get upset if something is said that is obscene if you?re hanging out in a room full of guys,? he says.

?It?s like going to a strip club as a female and getting upset that the chicks are all naked. For me it goes back to freedom of speech. We?re a harmless bunch of people. This is just guys being stupid guys.?

There?s also been pressure this year for gaming companies to do more to combat harassment.

Recently, an online video series called Extra Credits launched a campaign targeting Microsoft?s Xbox Live online gaming platform, describing it as ?the service most often referenced when harassment in our community comes up?.

On the Fat, Ugly or Slutty website, the majority of submissions also come from Xbox Live. Grace from the site says that although gamers can report harassment, there?s a widespread perception this achieves nothing.

?I feel a little sad,? she says. ?For some of the ones that I feel are really blatantly harassing it seems to me that maybe there should be something harsher for it, but maybe not everybody agrees and maybe not even Microsoft agrees.?

Looking through the Xbox-related posts on Fat, Ugly or Slutty, it?s not hard to find examples that confirm Grace?s concerns.

?You are a dumb slut, you stupid whore, I would rape you?? was one example reported to Microsoft ? and was sent from an account that is still active.

I found several other similar messages, confirmed that they had been reported, and sent them to Microsoft, requesting an interview to ask why these accounts were still active and what action had been taken. Microsoft turned the request down.

GraceGrace, of Fat Ugly or Slutty, says many women gamers feel reporting abuse achieves nothing

But Extra Credits appears to have had some success. In mid-May, the campaigners were invited to a meeting with Microsoft.

In a statement provided after the meeting, Microsoft said that ?bullying and harassment are not welcome on Xbox LIVE? but admitted that ?more can be done to create a safe and supportive play environment?.

Microsoft says it is working on ?near and long-term improvements to Xbox Live? and ?our commitment to solving this problem is strong?.

James Portnow, from Extra Credits, says: ?It looks like they?re really making some attempts to move forward with better enforcement. Of course in this industry I don?t believe anything until it?s out in front of the consumer.?

For gamers like Jenny Haniver, any improvements will be welcome.

?I have met so many cool people through Xbox Live, the vast majority of the community is kind and welcoming. It?s the absolute minority of people who are jerks, they?re just a really loud minority.?

Fears of on-ground deaths from Nigeria plane crash

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? Police dogs sniffed for dead bodies Monday in the rubble of buildings destroyed when an airliner crashed into them, killing all 153 aboard, as cranes lifted away heavy pieces of debris in the grisly aftermath of Nigeria's worst air disaster in nearly two decades.

Rescue officials said they fear many more people may have perished on the ground. The airline involved said an investigation had begun into the cause of Sunday's crash.

A Nigeria Red Cross report said 110 bodies had been recovered, with more being dug out from the rubble. A U.S. official said American citizens had been aboard the flight.

The pilots reported engine trouble before the plane fell out of the sky on a clear afternoon, smashing into businesses and crowded apartment buildings near Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The flight was bound for Lagos, Nigeria's commercial center, from Abuja, the capital. Two years ago, the same MD-83 lost engine power due to a bird strike, according to an aviation database.

"The fear is that since it happened in a residential area, there may have been many people killed," said Yushau Shuaib, a spokesman for Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency.

Overnight, officials brought in a large crane from a local construction company to lift the tail of the aircraft and other debris, and brought blow torches to cut through the aircraft wreckage. The debris still smoldered Monday morning. Some emergency workers wore masks to try and protect themselves from the stench of the dead.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan spent about 20 minutes looking at the wreckage with federal lawmakers and said the crash was a setback to Nigeria's growing aviation industry.

"We will make sure this will not repeat itself in this country," he said, a pledge that will be hard to keep in a nation with a history of major passenger plane crashes in the last 20 years.

The cause of the crash remained unclear Monday. The pilots radioed to the Lagos control tower just before the crash, reporting engine trouble, a military official said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to journalists. The plane crashed along the typical approach path taken by aircraft heading into Lagos' airport.

The plane was built by McDonnell Douglas, which Boeing bought in 1997. It was a long-range variant in McDonnell's Douglas' popular MD-80 series, one of the most widely used plane types in the 1980s and 90s. Boeing stopped making them in 1999.

Boeing said in a statement on its website that the company is ready to provide technical assistance to the Civil Aviation Authority on Nigeria through the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.

Dana Air said an investigation into the cause of the crash was already underway with U.S. officials assisting the Nigerian government. The company said the plane crashed with 146 passengers onboard, along with a flight engineer, two pilots and four cabin crew members.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the deceased, and we are doing everything we can to assist them in this extremely difficult time," a statement signed by Dana Air CEO Jacky Hathiramani read.

In Washington, a State Department official confirmed that there were "a number" of American citizens on board, most, if not all, of whom were dual U.S.-Nigerian nationals. The official said consular officials in Lagos, Abuja and Washington were still reviewing the flight manifest to determine exactly how many Americans were on the plane. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

The dead also included at least four Chinese citizens, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported late Sunday, citing Chinese diplomats in Nigeria. Officials at the Chinese embassy in Nigeria could not be reached for comment by the AP. Two of the crash victims were Lebanese, according to state-run Lebanon's National News Agency. Two of the crash victims were Lebanese, according to the Lebanese Foreign Ministry. The ministry identified them as Nadine Chidiac and Roger Awad.

The aircraft's black box recorders where flight data is stored had still not been found by Monday, said Harold Demuren, the director-general of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

Demuren said the Nigerian registration number of the plane was 5NRAM. Aviation databases show the plane was exported to Nigeria in early 2009. It was first delivered in 1990 with the U.S. registration number N944AS to Alaska Airlines and it suffered two minor incidents while in the Seattle-based airline's service, according to databases of the Federal Aviation Administration and the Aviation Safety Network. On Nov. 2, 2002, the plane made an emergency diversion due to smoke and electrical smell in the cabin, and on Aug. 20, 2006, the plane was evacuated after landing at Long Beach, California because of smoke in the passenger cabin.

Bobbie Egan, spokeswoman for Alaska Airlines, said she had no information on the aircraft that may have been used several years ago by the airline and referred calls to Alaska's corporate communications office.

On April 19, 2010, the plane made an emergency landing in Lagos due to loss of engine power after a bird strike following takeoff, according to the Aviation Safety Network.

Nigeria, home to more than 160 million people, has a history of major aviation disasters, though in recent years there hasn't been a crash. On Saturday night, a Nigerian Boeing 727 cargo airliner crashed in Accra, the capital of Ghana, slamming into a bus and killing 10 people. The plane belonged to Lagos-based Allied Air Cargo.

Lagos-based Dana Air has five aircraft in its fleet and runs both regional and domestic flights. It has announced on its website that all Monday flights have been canceled. Local media reported a similar Dana flight in May made an emergency landing at the Lagos airport after having a hydraulic problem.

Sunday's crash appeared to be the worst since September 1992, when a military transport plane crashed into a swamp shortly after takeoff from Lagos. All 163 army soldiers, relatives and crew members on board were killed.
